This year, the Wales Book of the Year Short List Event is coming to Brecon

On Thursday 10 May Literature Wales will be joined by some of Wales' best loved poets as they announce which writers have made it on to the Wales Book of the Year 2012 Short List. In the tranquil surroundings of Theatr Brycheiniog in Brecon, the audience will be treated to readings by current and former Bardd Plant Cymru Eurig Salisbury and Ceri Wyn Jones, National Poet of Wales Gillian Clarke and Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy. Penrhyn Castle, Bangor, Gwynedd, LL57 4HN.
Penrhyn Castle is built in the Norman style with a walled garden, ancient trees, rhododendrons, camellias and spectacular snowdrops in February.
Open11 noon–5 pm; daily, except Tuesdays, April to October. Open at 10 am in July & August. Last admissions 4.30 pm.

Plas Newydd, Llanfairpwll, Anglesey, LL61 6DQ.
Plas Newydd is a fine country house, with an Italianate garden and a wonderful collection of rhododendrons, which stands in a spectacular setting overlooking the Menai Straits. Open10 am–5.30 pm; Saturday–Wednesday; 19 March to 2 November. Rhododendron garden: 11.30–5.30 pm; Saturday–Wednesday; 2 April to 8 June

Portmeirion, Penrhyndeudraeth, Gwynedd, LL48 6ET
Portmeirion, made famous by the TV series The Prisoner, is where Sir Clough Williams-Ellis devised his Italianate, fantasy village. The gardens are a colourful mixture of Mediterranean plants and exotic palms, which combine with the varied architectural features to produce a stunning effect in a wonderful location.
Open 9.30 am–5.30 pm (7.30 pm in summer); daily; all year. Closed 25 December.
