BRECON'S ROOD CROSS RETURNS AFTER NEARLY 500 YEARS In 1538 King Henry VIII destroyed Brecon's rood screen - the division between the monks and the people in the Priory Church, now our Cathedral. On the screen had hung a gold crucifix which people from all over Wales and beyond had come on pilgrimage to touch. BRONZE CRUCIFIX BY SOUTH WALES ARTIST HELEN SINCLAIR Since 2nd April a life-size bronze crucifix has been hung near where the rood screen used to be. This new artwork will hang in the Cathedral until the end of July. The crucifix weighs 90 kg and was cast from driftwood from Rhossili beach on the Gower. It hangs from the trap door in the tower - used since the 13th century to lower the bells to ground level when they need repairing or tuning.
The Hours Bookshop - Ship Street, Brecon From Wednesday April 4th - a new show of recent paintings by the Pontardawe artist Lynnford Jones: 'Most of the paintings in this exhibition can be described as 'Abstract Expressionism', the remainder as 'Neo-Figurative', but with 'expressive' intent. All are the result of many years of effort and study...' Lynnford's work will then show in the upstairs Reading Room until Saturday April 28th.

TUESDAY 17 APRIL - TUESDAY 15 MAY SHIRLEY JONES, the internationally-renowned artist and printmaker based near Brecon, will be exhibiting her work in the Andrew Lamont Gallery in Theatr Brycheiniog from Tuesday 17 April to Sunday 15 May. As a postgraduate printmaking student she produced her first Artist book and has since produced twenty six more, in which she illustrates her own poems and translations from Old English and Old Welsh with her etchings and mezzo prints. Fifty of Shirley's etchings and mezzotints from these books will be displayed in this prestigious exhibition in which the painstaking and intensive processes involved in producing such books of art will be seen to outstanding effect. Twenty-five solo exhibitions of her work include exhibitions in the Victoria and Albert Museum and the National Library of Wales. Such is her esteem in this specialised field that she will be having an exhibition in the National Art Gallery Cardiff in 2013, and also a year-long touring exhibition in the USA. We are privileged to have the opportunity of viewing her work before it goes further afield next year. Please contact Theatr Brycheiniog box office for opening times on 01874 611622
