Senghenydd Remembered!

@ At the Memorial

It is once again approaching that time of year when we remember the 440 lives lost to the Universal Colliery Explosion, Senghenydd on October the 14th 1913 (this year to be held Monday the 15th October to enable the schools to take part). A memorial service for the miners who lost their lives in the Universal colliery disasters. Service commencing at 10.00am. Service led by Rev Sue Rees Church of St Peters and St Cenydd and Captain Paula Hubbard of the Salvation Army Together with the children and students of the Aber Valley

The victims of this disaster will be remembered, along with the 81 men and boys who lost their lives in the earlier Universal Colliery explosion of 1901 at a Memorial Service to be held at the Universal Colliery Memorial outside Nant-y-Parc Primary School. The Service will again bring members of the community together along with the Valley's school children to remember all those killed. Following the Service there will be the opportunity for those attending to visit the Aber Valley Heritage Museum at Senghenydd Community Centre. On display will be 3 scale models produced by sculptor Les Johnson. We will be encouraging people to give their views on the bronze models to help make a decision on the final design for the new Memorial We will also have designs for the Memorial garden on display for people to see. Floral tributes may be laid.
