The national instrument of Wales is getting its very own festival at the National Botanic Garden this sum The very first Summer Harp Festival takes place on the Sunday and Monday of August Bank Holiday (Aug 29-30) when you can see royal harpists past and present Catrin Finch and Claire Jones in concert (Claire Jones sponsored by Salvi Harps in Cardiff); Catrin is also holding a masterclass; there is a harp orchestra in action, numerous recitals, talks, tours and hands-on opportunities for harpists of all ages and abilities. mer.

The Garden is teaming up with major harp companies: Telynau Teifi (Welsh Harp Centre), Telynau Vining harps and Salvi Harps as well as Save The Children to bring visitors two days of fantastic harp action and fun for all the family. To launch the first ever Summer Harp Festival, the Garden is hosting a launch event at 12 noon on Monday April 12 to which you are invited. There will be a showcase of harpists studying the harp at a variety of different levels in Wales. A Year 3 class from Baden Powell primary school in Tremorfa will perform as a class orchestra, instruments in the group include seven lap harps. Under the direction of Emma Coulthard (Music Development Officer) and her team, these children have all had the opportunity to learn instruments and play as an ensemble. Sian Wynn from Cardiff will present the Cardiff and Vale of Glamorgan Music Service harp ensemble who recently performed in St David's hall. The group is made up of children enjoying learning the harp in school. Finally we will be treated to a short recital by Llywelyn Ifan Jones, an excellent student of the harp at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. There will also be light refreshments.
