This is a beautiful part of Wales, with traditional market towns, stunning landscape, canal paths, castles and plenty of family attractions. The scenery here is both beautiful and diverse - rolling countryside and valleys, wide open spaces to the wild beauty of the waterfalls and caves. The National Park Authority runs an excellent programme of Walks, activities and events.

If skies are clear their telescopes will be focused on interesting phenomena in the night sky, or if cloudy there will be lectures indoors. Price includes parking, soup and a roll. Come and discover the magic of this Special Area of Conservation with the help of National Park wardens. Length: 3 miles / 4.8km. Total ascent: 150m. Grade: Strenuous. Travel Writing in the Brecon Beacons with Llion Iwan - A walk for Welsh speakers The multi-talented author Llion Iwan will take you on an informal travel writing moderate walk around Penwyllt. Voices from the past whisper from every historical landmark on this beautiful and fascinating trail. Llion is the author of the acclaimed travel book O Afallon i Shangri La (Gwasg Gomer, 2001) which tells the story of an epic bike ride through one of the world's most desolate places on earth in Tibet. Llion will explore how his experiences have inspired his writing, and share a few travel writing secrets and tips en route. Bring a packed lunch. No dogs please. Car parking (£2.50) is not included. Sun 13 May 14:00 - 17:00 Field study visit Carreg Cennen's Coed y Castell This quiet woodland has much more to it than first meets the eye! Due to a geological fault, both Limestone and Old Red Sandstone are exposed here: these support different species, creating two very distinct habitats within the wood. Because of its special habitats, Coed y Castell is designated as a site of Special Scientific Interest and specialists from Swansea University DACE will be on hand during this moderate level walk to reveal some of its more interesting and hidden gems. Sun 17 Jun 14:00 - 17:00 Field study visit: Cribarth and Mynydd Du SSSI Walk up on to the “sleeping giant” mountain with specialists from Swansea University DACE to see an outcrop of Limestone with herb-rich grassland and nearby Millstone Grit which supports extensive areas of heathland dominated by heather and bilberry providing an ideal opportunity to see the fascinating variations in the area's plant life. On a clear day there are fine views over Old Red Sandstone and across to a Millstone Grit escarpment at Penwyllt. Sun 1 Jul 10:00 - 14:30 Milling around Talgarth Join us for a moderate 8 mile circular walk through Trefecca to Mynydd Troed and Penyrwrlodd Long Barrow where the remains of at least fifteen humans, along with flint arrow heads and a flint knife and most interesting of all a hollow sheep bone which appears to be fashioned into a flute, making it the earliest musical instrument found in the British Isles! Come and view one of nature's finest shows: the Perseid meteor shower, live from the dark skies above the National Park. Experts from Dark Sky Wales will help you explore the heavens in their portable planetarium; view stars and planets through telescopes. Sat 1 Sep 10:00 - 13:00 The Naked Ladies of Hay Join us and guest speaker Jon Saville on this lovely 4 mile moderate walk to see the deadly and at risk naked ladies of Hay, meadow saffron. We will follow Offa's Dyke footpath up to Henallt Common, a Special Site of Scientific Interest positioned on a steep sided, north-west facing sandstone scarp which supports a good population of plant species that are rare and declining in Wales, before returning back to Hay for lunch. Henallt Common is one of the best sites in Britain to see meadow saffron, which should be in full bloom with thousands of rosy-pink flowers on display. Suggested donation £3 per person. Sat 8 Sep 9:00 - 11:00: Horse riding and poetry with Owen Sheers and/or 12:30 - 17:30: Resistance - A walk with Owen Sheers Join Owen Sheers in an exploration of the Llanthony Valley, with full and half-day options. A horse-trek for beginners in the morning will gently follow valley bridleways for a view of Skirrid Hill; the inspiration for Owen's second poetry collection and subject of readings and discussion en route. The afternoon will start with a steep strenuous climb and follow a section of Offa's Dyke Path. Owen will discuss the significance of this boundary between the Olchon and Llanthony Valleys in his novel and recent feature film Resistance. Wales has the perfect climate for finding a bounty of free food and September is usually a great time of year for mushrooms and toadstools of all sorts of shapes, sizes, colours and textures which spring up in the woodlands and grasslands of the Country Park. Sun 23 Sep 13:00 - 16:00 Fungi and Lichens Exquisite, wildly varied and often surprising, fungi and lichen are part of the essential fabric of our countryside upon which all other wildlife depends. Join expert, Ray Woods, on this walk through the Country Park and up into the new Allt Rhongyr nature reserve, to look at the rich variety of fungi and lichens which grow here. Why are they so special, what do they contribute to their habitats and what role do they play in conservation? Join National Park wardens for an easy 4 mile (6.5km) walk to view the Lake's winter visitors and find out about the British Trust for Ornithology's bird ringing programme and some of the fascinating results obtained by trained and qualified bird ringers.
